Broadhead Arrows
The four main factors that influence arrow penetration are Kinetic Energy, Broadhead Type, Friction, and Arrow Construction/Flight. Each work in concert, and one can sometimes influence one or more of the others and affect penetration.
Kinetic Energy is the main determining factor when it comes to arrow penetration. The other factors play a part but not to the extent that KE does. If you have enough KE, you can almost forget about the other factors.

The common belief among many archers/hunters is that a traditional style, two blade head will penetrate better than a modern three blade head. You may find that shooting the two types into a foam target will have the two blade head penetrate deeper into the foam because it offers less friction.
What would likely happen in the real world if you could shoot the same animal in the same spot with these two broadheads is that both would pass through the deer. Perhaps the two-blade head might go deeper into the ground, but the three-blade head might offer a better bloodtrail and a quicker kill. So the differences are usually minor given the power of most of today’s bows.
